Aramco inks US LNG purchase deal with Sempra
A subsidiary of Saudi Arabia's state-owned oil company, Aramco Services Company, announced Wednesday that it had signed an agreement to buy 5 million tons of LNG from Sempra Energy's US Port Arthur export project.
The Heads of Agreement was signed with Sempra LNG and when finalized, will last for 20 years. The total capacity of the project is expected to be 11 million mt/year, but there is potential for the project to be expanded up to eight liquefaction trains with a capacity of 45 million mt/year.
Included in the initial agreement is a 25% equity investment by Aramco into phase one of the development of Port Arthur LNG.
"With global demand for LNG expected to grow by around 4% per year, and likely to exceed 500 million metric tons a year by 2035, we see significant opportunities in this market and we will continue to pursue strategic partnerships which enable us to meet rising global demand for LNG," Amin Nasser, Saudi Aramco's CEO & President, said.
The statement does not specify if Aramco plans to consume or trade the gas. Nasser has previously outlined the company's goals to become a top LNG trader.
The US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission gave the certificate approval to Port Arthur LNG in April. In December, Polish Oil & Gas signed a deal to buy 2 million mt/year of LNG from Sempra Energy, and said it plans to make a final investment decision once full LNG supply is contracted out.
