Georgia has signed a gas supply agreement with Gazprom
Tbilisi, Neftegaz.RU. Georgia agreed with Gazprom on the purchase of natural gas.
G. Kobulia spoke about Georgia’s plans to buy Russian gas in February 2019. This contradicts the previous policy of Georgia, which resolutely rejected Russian gas and has not purchased gas from Gazprom since 2006. At the same time, Georgia nevertheless received Russian gas as a payment for transit to Armenia at the rate of 10% of the transit volume. It was decided to refuse to pay in kind, and from 2017 Russia paid Georgia for gas transit to Armenia in monetary terms partially, and from 2018 - in full.
In March 2019, Georgia managed to secure from Gazprom an improvement in the terms of the gas transit contract to Armenia, with its extension for 2019-2020. Georgian Prime Minister M. Bakhtadze did not disclose the details of negotiations with Gazprom, saying only that Georgia managed to achieve an increase in transit fees. At the same time, Deputy Minister of Economy N.Turnava reported that the purchase price for Russian gas for interested private buyers would be reduced.
The main source of gas supplies for Georgia, which is almost completely dependent on gas imports, is currently Azerbaijan. But gas supplies from the Shah-Deniz field in Azerbaijan were not always stable, which made Georgia think about diversifying gas supplies. So, in January-March 2017, Georgia purchased 100 million m 3 of gas from Gazprom. Due to the problems at the Shah Deniz field in early February 2017, for several days it was necessary to restrict the gas supply to Georgia from the territory of Azerbaijan. In the future, Georgia tried to avoid such situations, but apparently Gazprom gave the country a decent discount, which is quite likely, given the small volume of supplies.
