Williams sheds Powder River Basin gas gathering assets in sale to partner Crestwood
Williams sold its 50% stake in a natural gas system in Wyoming's Powder River Basin to partner Crestwood for $484.6 million, nine months after the two companies said they planned to significantly expand the operations there together to meet demand in what they described as an underserved region.
The sale, announced Wednesday, reflects Williams' efforts to streamline its portfolio to focus more on its pipeline operations, which come with stable fixed fees and less exposure to volatile commodity prices. Crestwood Equity Partners sees PRB gathering and processing as core assets, and is looking for scale to enhance its market position.
Even with Williams' overhaul, the deal marks a reversal. In July 2018, it and Crestwood said they planned to boost operations tied to their Jackalope Gas Gathering System, including increasing processing capacity in phases to 345 MMcf/d by the end of 2019. Plans also called for building a second plant on the Bucking Horse gas processing plant footprint in Converse County. The operations there also provide compression services.
